Equity Bank gives Busoga High School a new bus, with cameras onboard

The Observer reported that Busoga High School has received a 67-seat Isuzu school bus from Equity Bank Uganda, equipped with onboard cameras and financed through the bank’s asset financing services. The handover took place this week amid heightened concern in Uganda over accidents involving schoolchildren and school vehicles.

According to the report, Kamuli municipal education officer Ivan Wakabi, who attended as guest of honour, said many learners have been walking about two to three kilometres to and from school, exposing them to traffic risks. He described the bus as a safer, more controlled transport option for students and urged schools to prioritize roadworthy vehicles, maintenance and stronger safety practices instead of relying on informal or unsafe transport arrangements.

Busoga High School board chairperson Dr Kakuba Mpango also addressed the responsibility placed on the driver, stressing careful driving and compliance with traffic rules. A priest was invited to bless both the bus and the driver before the vehicle begins service. Equity Bank’s Jinja branch manager, Tom Mwanje, said the financing is part of the bank’s wider support to schools, including loans for infrastructure such as dormitories and laboratories, as well as short-term operational needs.

The Observer placed the handover in the context of the Ministry of Education and Sports’ suspension of school trips and tours while authorities examine recent crashes involving school transport. The new bus is being presented as a practical response for Busoga High, with cameras intended to improve accountability on board.
