Equity bank backs Vurra Secondary School

What the report says
Vurra Secondary School in Arua district is expanding its facilities as enrollment rises, with support from Equity Bank Uganda. According to The Observer, the school was founded by the Church in 1981 and later became government-aided, but like many growing schools it has struggled to keep pace with demand for classrooms and accommodation.
The report says the school secured a Shs 120 million credit facility from Equity Bank in 2024, which helped it complete a Shs 280 million boys’ dormitory with space for 120 students. Head teacher David Dima said the new block has reduced pressure on the school’s existing accommodation. The school is now planning a matching dormitory for girls, while also seeking more land and possible financing for a bus.
The article says enrollment could reach 900 students next year, with a long-term target of 1,200. School leaders said additional infrastructure will be needed to avoid turning away qualified learners. It also notes that the school is considering support measures for teachers and other staff not on the government payroll.
Equity Bank managing director Gift Shoko said the bank sees value in helping schools begin construction before full payment is completed, a model that the report presents as a way to support growth without forcing institutions to delay projects.
