Eom has strength to move on after alleged racist abuse

What the report says
Swansea City head coach Vitor Matos said winger Eom Ji-sung has the resilience to move past the alleged racist abuse reported during his team’s 1-0 Championship win at Millwall. According to BBC Sport Football, Swansea staff reported the incident at The Den on Tuesday, and the Metropolitan Police are now investigating. Matos said Eom, a South Korea international, feels supported at the club and has handled the episode with maturity.
BBC Sport reported that the match was briefly halted for about seven minutes after the allegation was raised in the second half, and Matos praised Millwall officials for following the proper protocol. He said the incident was upsetting in football and in society more broadly, but added that reporting the abuse was the correct response and that the focus now is on letting the investigation run its course.
The coach also drew a comparison with a separate racism-related issue involving Swansea forward Adam Idah, saying he had spoken to the player about an alleged incident during a Republic of Ireland match last month. That case is being looked at by the Football Association of Ireland. Matos said the two situations were different because the referee in Idah’s case did not hear anything, while at Millwall the protocol was activated.
Eom, who did not play at Millwall, has scored eight goals in 96 appearances since joining Swansea from Gwangju FC in 2024. Swansea are top of the Championship and are due to face West Ham United on Saturday.
