English FA charges Southampton coach Tonda Eckert over ‘spygate’ scandal

Al Jazeera, citing AFP, reported that the English Football Association has charged Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert over a spying case that led to the club being removed from last season’s Championship playoff final. The FA alleges Eckert committed three breaches of rule E3.1, relating to misconduct and conduct that may have brought the game into disrepute, between December 2025 and May 2026.

The case centres on Southampton’s admitted observation of training sessions held by Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough before matches against those clubs. The most damaging episode involved Middlesbrough ahead of the playoff semifinals in May. Southampton won that tie, but were later expelled from the final against Hull City and given a four-point deduction for the 2026-27 campaign. Middlesbrough took Southampton’s place in the final and lost to Hull.

According to the report, a Football League-appointed independent disciplinary commission found the espionage had been authorised by Eckert and described it as a coordinated plan led from senior levels. The panel also found that junior Southampton staff felt pressure to carry out the observations requested by Eckert and senior coaches. Eckert, who reportedly accepted responsibility in June, has until next Tuesday to respond to the FA charge.

The episode carries major sporting and financial significance because promotion to the Premier League was estimated to be worth about £200 million, or $267 million. Southampton said it would cooperate with the FA while continuing to support Eckert and his staff. Owner Dragan Solak had previously indicated he did not plan to dismiss the coach. Southampton are due to begin the new season with a League Cup match at Colchester on August 8, followed by a Championship opener at Watford on August 16.
