Aston Villa’s difficult start to the Premier League season continued with a 2-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, leaving manager Unai Emery looking for explanations after three losses in their opening four matches. The BBC Sport Football report said Villa have struggled to find rhythm following a summer rebuild and could slip to the bottom of the table if other results go against them.

Forest took the lead through Liam Delap early in the second half, before Alysson equalised for Villa with his first goal in English football. Late on, Igor Jesus scored the winner for Forest, securing their first victory at Villa Park since 1994. The visitors were described as the stronger side, creating more chances and spending sustained periods in Villa’s penalty area.

Villa also had injury problems, with full-back Ian Maatsen forced off after a challenge Emery felt should have led to a red card for Forest’s James McAtee. Emery said the decision was not an excuse, however, and criticised his team’s second-half performance, saying they played poorly and lost their shape. Centre-back Pau Torres was also substituted before halftime, adding to Villa’s defensive concerns.

The result adds to wider concerns about Villa’s home form. BBC Sport noted that, despite strong achievements last season including a fourth-place Premier League finish and Europa League success, their Villa Park record has weakened since last summer. The club now faces a quick turnaround with a Carabao Cup tie at Coventry and a league trip to Tottenham next.
