What the report says

Yahoo Finance Singapore reported that short interest in Space Exploration Technologies Corp. has climbed sharply ahead of the company’s first earnings report as a public company. According to the article, SpaceX listed in June under the ticker SPCX in what it described as the largest IPO on record, opening at $135 a share and briefly reaching a $2.1 trillion valuation. S3 Partners data cited by Yahoo put short interest at more than 206 million shares, or about 32% of the float, equal to roughly $25 billion in bearish positioning.

The report said the buildup is tied in part to SpaceX’s limited public float and staggered lockup schedule. Fewer than 5% of total shares were initially available for trading, with additional tranches scheduled to unlock after the IPO. Yahoo reported that the first major release is expected two trading days after the August 4 earnings report, with up to 911.5 million shares becoming eligible for sale on August 6. A separate conditional tranche would require the stock to meet a higher price threshold that the article said appeared unlikely based on recent trading.

Elon Musk responded on X by warning that firms maintaining large short positions against SpaceX face poor long-term odds, according to Yahoo. The company’s upcoming earnings release is expected to give investors their first detailed public view of its financial performance since listing.

The development matters because unusually high short interest, a thin float and a major lockup expiration can amplify volatility. Yahoo’s article noted that a positive earnings surprise or lighter insider selling could pressure short sellers, while the added share supply may also weigh on the stock after results.
