What the report says

Forbes reported that Elon Musk’s estimated fortune fell below $700 billion on Monday, July 27, 2026, after another drop in SpaceX shares. According to Forbes, the Tesla and SpaceX chief executive’s net worth declined by $29.5 billion to $695.7 billion, marking the first time it had finished below that level since December 2025. Musk had recently referred to himself on X as a “former” trillionaire, Forbes noted.

The decline followed a 4.8% fall in SpaceX shares to about $109.50 as of 10:50 a.m. EDT, extending a roughly 50% slide from a June 16 peak. Forbes said Musk’s SpaceX stake includes 4.8 billion shares and 350 million stock options. Despite the drop, Forbes still ranked him far ahead of Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin among the world’s wealthiest people.

The article said the selloff continued even after SpaceX completed a successful Starship test launch on Friday. Forbes cited analyst caution around the rocket program, including expectations of both gains and setbacks over many more launches through 2027. A previous aborted Starship launch on July 16 had also weighed on SpaceX shares and Musk’s wealth, according to the report.

Forbes framed the move as part of a broader reversal since Musk’s estimated net worth peaked at $1.45 trillion on June 16, shortly after SpaceX’s initial public offering. The outlet said about $116 billion of the decline reflected its removal of certain Tesla options because of new vesting conditions.
