Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella Show 'Overwhelming Support' for Open-Weight AI Models as OpenAI - Benzinga

What the report says
Benzinga reported that Elon Musk, Satya Nadella and Mark Zuckerberg publicly backed open-weight artificial intelligence models as a group of technology companies and organizations pressed U.S. policymakers to support such systems. The article, published July 25, said the push was tied to a joint industry statement signed by Microsoft, Meta, Nvidia, IBM, Mistral AI, Hugging Face, Andreessen Horowitz and others.
According to Benzinga, Nadella argued on X that open-weight models are important to a healthy AI sector and linked them to U.S. competitiveness, economic opportunity and national security safeguards. Zuckerberg also supported the effort, calling open source a force against centralization, while Musk amplified Zuckerberg’s post and described the support for open source as overwhelming. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang also endorsed the initiative in what Benzinga described as his first post on X.
The report said 25 organizations signed the statement, while Alphabet, Amazon, OpenAI and Anthropic were not among the signatories. Benzinga also noted that OpenAI and Anthropic have reportedly pushed for stricter limits on Chinese open-source AI models, citing concerns about how publicly released models could be misused.
The development matters because open-weight AI is a central policy and business debate: supporters say wider access can speed innovation, improve transparency and reduce concentration of power, while critics warn that powerful models may be harder to control once released. Benzinga linked the renewed attention to Moonshot AI’s July 16 release of its open-weight Kimi K3 model, which it said approached frontier-level performance and unsettled chip stocks.
