Electrek reported that the second day of the 2026 Electrek Formula Sun Grand Prix wrapped up late on July 22, with updated lap totals setting the field for the event’s final day. According to the report, 30 teams had been cleared to run on track as Day 3 began, while 12 had already met the requirements to enter the cross-country Electrek American Solar Challenge. In the Single Occupant Vehicle class, École de technologie supérieure of Quebec led after Day 2 with 234 laps. Delft University of Technology of the Netherlands followed closely with 221 laps and continued to hold the fastest reported 3.1-mile lap, at 3 minutes and 12 seconds, which Electrek described as roughly 58 mph. The report highlighted the pace as notable given that the vehicles are student-built and solar-powered.

The Multi-Occupant Vehicle class had fewer teams qualified at that point. Electrek said only Georgia Tech and App State had secured American Solar Challenge eligibility after Day 2, with 160 and 146 laps, respectively, out of nine vehicles in the class. The article noted that qualification required either 200 miles, or 65 laps, in one day, or 300 miles, or 97 laps, over two consecutive days.

Electrek also explained that Multi-Occupant Vehicle rankings depend on a scoring formula, including an “S-value,” rather than lap count alone. The publisher said teams including Iowa State, Poly Montréal and possibly MIT appeared positioned to qualify if they avoided major vehicle problems.
