Elderly Ugandans Struggle with Loneliness, Poverty as Calls Grow for More Support

What the report says
Uganda’s older population is facing growing economic, health and social pressures, according to a report from Nile Post. The article says community leaders and organisations working with older persons are urging families and local communities to do more to support dignified ageing, especially as loneliness, limited incomes, poor nutrition and restricted access to healthcare affect many people over 60.
The concerns were discussed at a community event in Lweza, in Makindye-Ssabagabo, held to mark the International Day of Older Persons. The gathering brought together older people, local leaders, health workers and advocacy groups. Speakers encouraged older adults to stay socially connected, look after their health and remain active where possible, rather than becoming isolated at home.
Nile Post reported that people aged 60 and above make up about 5% of Uganda’s population, or roughly 2.3 million people, based on the 2024 National Population and Housing Census. Participants at the event also raised concerns about low incomes, vulnerability to exploitation and disputes over property. Former Buganda Katikkiro John Baptist Walusimbi suggested older people could join group activities such as poultry keeping to improve livelihoods and reduce isolation.
Mark Mwesigwa of the Palliative Care Association of Uganda said older persons should be included in care and support systems, and called for better interaction between younger and older generations. The broader message from the meeting was that support for older Ugandans should involve families, communities, civil society and health providers, not only government.
