Egypt: Minawi Urges Restraint As Fallout From Deadly Sudan-Egypt Border Strikes Widens

What the report says
Darfur Governor Minni Minnawi has called for restraint and a careful fact-finding process after reported deadly strikes on Sudanese artisanal gold miners near the Egyptian border. According to Dabanga, which AllAfrica distributed, the incident has heightened tensions between Sudan and Egypt, with Minnawi saying most of the reported victims came from Darfur and urging authorities not to let one event fuel suspicion against entire communities.
The report said Minnawi met with Egypt’s ambassador and consul in Port Sudan on Wednesday, where the diplomats reportedly expressed regret over the casualties and said an investigation was under way with Sudanese cooperation. Minnawi called for the findings to be published transparently and for anyone found responsible to be held accountable. Sudanese military and civilian bodies have also moved to investigate, including a fact-finding committee ordered by Sudan’s army chief and a separate inquiry announced by the National Human Rights Commission.
The fallout is spreading beyond the border area. Rights groups have raised concerns about the fate of people fleeing the strikes, while civil and political organisations have demanded accountability and cautioned against misinformation. The report also said cross-border transport and trade have been affected, with the Egyptian Truck Drivers’ Union suspending movements and border crossings in Northern State remaining closed amid protests and restrictions on imports.
The episode comes against the backdrop of broader Sudan-Egypt border frictions and a wider humanitarian and economic strain in Sudan, where disputes over movement, trade and safety continue to affect civilians, traders and migrant communities.
