Economic Forum Urges Ugandans to Turn AFCON 2027 Into Jobs and Household Income

What the report says
Uganda’s 7th UG Economic Forum used its second day to press businesses and government to treat AFCON 2027 as an economic opportunity, not only a sporting event. The forum, held at Next Media Park under the theme “Putting Money in People’s Pockets: Translating Economic Growth into Household Prosperity,” focused on how the tournament could create jobs, support local enterprises and raise household incomes.
According to Nile Post, Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang urged Ugandans to position themselves to benefit from the expected influx of visitors and activity when Uganda co-hosts the tournament with Kenya and Tanzania in 2027. He said renovations at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, were progressing and that Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira was expected to be ready by December. Speakers also discussed the need for stronger tourism promotion, better customer service, affordable financing and improved business readiness.
Officials and industry representatives said travel packages, hospitality, transport, retail and community-based enterprises could all gain if the country attracts more visitors and keeps them moving beyond match venues. Uganda Tourism Board and AFCON organizing figures emphasized that local hospitality and destination marketing will be important if the event is to produce lasting revenue. Others, including business and planning officials, said access to credit, staff training, service quality and reliable operations will determine whether the anticipated demand turns into real income.
The discussion also reflected a broader point often raised around major sports events: their benefits are greatest when host countries prepare local firms and workers to capture spending before, during and after the tournament.
