EC Sets September 17 for Adjumani West MP By-Election, Unveils Roadmap

Uganda’s Electoral Commission has set September 17, 2026, as polling day for the Adjumani West Constituency parliamentary by-election, which will fill the seat left vacant after the death of Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali. Nile Post reports that the roadmap was unveiled at a stakeholders’ meeting on Monday at the Adjumani District headquarters, led by EC Chairperson Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama.

The meeting brought together election officials, local leaders, security agencies, prospective candidates, civil society groups, religious leaders and media representatives. Adjumani district election administrator and returning officer Akao Eunice Christine said the gathering was meant to prepare stakeholders for a transparent and credible poll. The EC also said voters in Adjumani West, which has 114 polling stations, will go through register updates and voter transfers from August 5 to 7, followed by public display of the voters register from August 17 to 26.

Nomination of candidates is scheduled for September 7 and 8, with campaigns set for September 9 to 15. The Commission also announced a separate election for the Female Older Persons Representative in Pachara Sub-county on September 16 because no nominations were made during the 2025/2026 General Elections. Justice Byabakama and other officials urged contestants and voters to avoid violence, vote buying and other breaches of electoral law.

Local leaders and aspirants used the meeting to call for adequate staffing, fairness, transparency and strong security. The roadmap matters because it sets the timetable for a competitive by-election in a politically significant West Nile constituency and signals the Commission’s effort to manage the process before polling day.
