EC sets September 17 for Adjumani West by-election

The Electoral Commission has set September 17, 2026, as polling day for the Adjumani West parliamentary by-election, which will fill the seat left vacant after the death of Gen. Moses Ali. The announcement was made in Adjumani District on Monday during a stakeholders’ meeting that brought together political parties, prospective candidates, local leaders, security officials and election administrators.

According to the EC, the by-election is being conducted under Uganda’s constitutional and parliamentary election rules for filling parliamentary vacancies. The commission said the process was triggered after Gen. Ali’s death on July 18, 2026. EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said the meeting was intended both to present the electoral timetable and to gather stakeholder input so the exercise can proceed smoothly.

EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama urged parties and voters to avoid violence and bribery, and said the commission aims to deliver a free, fair and credible poll. Adjumani Deputy Resident District Commissioner Emmanuel Okware said security agencies are ready to support a peaceful election. The roadmap includes an update of the National Voters Register at parish level from August 5 to 7, and public display of the voters’ register from August 17 to 26 so eligible voters can check their details before nominations.

The Independent Uganda reported that at least nine people have indicated interest in the seat, including several seeking the NRM flag and one independent aspirant. Gen. Moses Ali had represented Adjumani West since 2016 and also held senior government roles, including First Deputy Prime Minister.
