EBus Xpress Adds Three Kira Routes as MTN Expands Cashless Payments

EBus Xpress has widened its electric bus service into Kira Municipality with three new routes that began operating on August 28, according to Nile Post. The added services connect Ntinda with Najjera, Kira, Kitukutwe, Kiwologoma and Nakwero; Ntinda with Naalya, Kyaliwajjala, Namugongo and Sonde; and Ntinda with Kisasi, Kyanja and Kungu. The expansion is aimed at serving fast-growing suburbs in the greater Kampala area, where commuters face rising demand for more reliable transport.

The rollout is being carried out through a partnership involving MTN Uganda, Kiira Motors Corporation and EBus Xpress. As part of the arrangement, passengers can buy and top up transport cards using MTN Mobile Money, and they may also pay directly through a mobile shortcode. The buses are also offering onboard Wi-Fi, adding internet access to the service.

MTN Uganda’s Senyonga Ibrahim said the collaboration is meant to bring digital services into daily commuting and make travel more seamless. Kampala minister Minsa Kabanda said the move marks progress toward modernising public transport, while Kiira Motors and local officials framed it as part of broader efforts to support cleaner mobility and local innovation. The report said the wider rollout builds on earlier EBus Xpress routes in Kampala and links to the government and private-sector push for less congested, more sustainable urban transport.
