Ebola cases in Congo top 3,200, nearing record of the country’s worst outbreak

The New York Post reports that confirmed infections in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s current Ebola outbreak have climbed to 3,262, according to an overnight update from the country’s Ministry of Health. The outbreak, centered in eastern Ituri province, has killed 1,437 people and is approaching the scale of Congo’s 2018-2020 Ebola crisis, which remains the country’s largest recorded outbreak with more than 3,400 cases and over 2,200 deaths, based on U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention figures cited by the Post.

The Post says the current outbreak was declared on May 15 and has expanded unusually quickly. Mercy Corps response lead Onesphore Bangenza, based in Bunia, described the pace as alarming, noting that case totals in about 10 weeks are nearing those from a roughly two-year outbreak. The virus involved is the Bundibugyo strain, for which the article says there are no approved vaccines or treatments, making containment more difficult than in some previous Ebola responses.

Response efforts have also been complicated by insecurity in eastern Congo, including rebel violence, attacks or hostility directed at responders in some communities, and strikes by health workers over unpaid wages. The Post reports that health officials have not yet identified the first patient in this outbreak, while conflict-driven displacement and illegal mining activity have made contact tracing harder.

The article adds that community relations may be improving in some affected areas, including Mongbwalu, where residents had previously attacked treatment sites. The development matters because Ebola can spread rapidly through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, and delays in isolation, treatment, safe burials and contact tracing can accelerate outbreaks in areas already strained by violence and weak health infrastructure.
