According to Gizmodo, lead author Erica Ferrer, a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, Santa Barbara’s National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, said aquatic ecosystem stability depends on oxygen and that deoxygenation interacts with other global environmental risks. The report explains that organisms rely on dissolved oxygen gas in water, not the oxygen chemically bound in H2O. Warmer waters hold less dissolved oxygen, and warming can also reduce mixing between surface and deeper layers.

The article also points to nutrient pollution from agriculture, wastewater, runoff and industrial activity as a major contributor. Excess nitrogen and phosphorus can spur algal blooms, whose decay consumes oxygen; warming and microbial activity can intensify the effect. Gizmodo cites Copernicus, the European Union Earth observation and monitoring program, for the estimate that the global ocean has lost about 2% of dissolved oxygen since the 1950s and could lose an additional 1% to 7% by century’s end.

The review’s authors propose potential indicators for tracking the problem, including dissolved oxygen levels, oxygen capacity, shifts in oxygen-sensitive species and the Metabolic Index, which compares organisms’ oxygen needs with what is available. The issue matters because low-oxygen conditions can disrupt food webs, biodiversity and climate-linked feedbacks, while the policy implications remain uncertain.
