Fox News reported that actor Ed Harris said he nearly tried to leave Taylor Sheridan’s “Dutton Ranch” during production of its first season, after feeling the role he accepted did not match what had been described to him before he signed on. Harris, who plays veterinarian Everett McKinney in the Paramount+ “Yellowstone” spinoff, told Variety that he had expected to be one of the show’s central figures but felt his character was not given enough weight while filming.

According to Fox News, Harris said he raised concerns with the production, describing himself as frustrated and “underused and inconsequential.” He also objected to the removal of a scene in which his character was supposed to sing in a bar, saying the cut made him think about voiding his contract. Harris said producers explained the musical moment did not fit the tone of the episode’s darker ending.

The report noted that Harris later softened his view after seeing the completed season, saying the show was strong overall and that Everett came across as more important in the final version than he had felt during filming. Still, he said the experience on set left him dissatisfied at the time. Fox News said Harris remains signed for two seasons, and it was not clear whether he is actively seeking to exit.

“Dutton Ranch” premiered on Paramount+ in May and follows Beth Dutton, played by Kelly Reilly, and Rip Wheeler, played by Cole Hauser, as they leave Montana for South Texas. The cast also includes Annette Bening, Finn Little, Juan Pablo Raba, Jai Courtney, J.R. Villarreal, Marc Menchaca and Natalie Alyn Lind. Fox News said it contacted Paramount, Sheridan and Harris for comment.
