Driver remanded over crash that killed two journalists

John Baptist Kigozi, the driver accused in a fatal road crash on Entebbe Road, has been remanded to prison until August 31, 2026, according to Sqoop Uganda. He appeared before the Chief Magistrates Court at Kajjansi on Friday over charges linked to the August 7 crash at Nalulanda.

The publication said Kigozi faces five counts: two allegations of causing death by reckless driving, one of causing injury by reckless driving, reckless driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested on August 13 in a joint operation days after the crash, which killed two journalists and seriously injured a third.

Sqoop Uganda reported that the victims were Sanyuka TV producer and trade marketing officer Badru Kasirye and digital content creator Isaac Ndamagye. Their colleague, presenter Brian “Macona” Ssemanda, survived with serious head injuries and has been recovering in hospital. The three were said to have been returning from a celebrity boxing event when the crash happened in the early hours of August 7.

The case has drawn attention from Uganda’s media and entertainment circles, and the court is expected to consider bail and related matters when proceedings resume on August 31.
