Driver in Crash That Killed Two Next Media Journalists Arrested

Police in Uganda have arrested the driver of a Toyota Hilux pickup linked to the Nnamulanda crash that killed two Next Media journalists and seriously injured presenter Brian “Makona” Ssemanda. According to Nile Post, the suspect is John Baptist Kigozi, who was taken into custody in a joint inter-agency operation after investigations into the August 7, 2026 collision along Entebbe Road.

Traffic Police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura said Kigozi would be brought before court to face charges connected to the crash. The arrest comes about a week after the accident, which triggered widespread mourning in Uganda’s media sector. The two journalists who died at the scene were identified as Badru Kasirye, also known as Producer Badru, and Isaac Ndamagye, both of Next Media.

Police said the journalists were travelling in a Toyota Allex returning to Kampala after covering a celebrity boxing event when it collided head-on with the Hilux near Stabex fuel station at Nnamulanda. The report says the pickup had been coming from Entebbe and crossed into the oncoming lane before impact. Ssemanda was taken to hospital with severe injuries and is continuing to recover, while Next Media has also supported the families of the deceased staff. The case highlights continuing concerns about road safety and the impact of fatal crashes on Uganda’s media community.
