DRC Ebola Death Toll Passes 1,000 as Fastest-Spreading Outbreak on Record Continues

Medical Daily reported that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo had exceeded 1,000 deaths as of July 23, 2026, describing it as the fastest fatal surge recorded for the virus. Citing DRC health authorities, the report said there were 1,033 deaths, 2,536 confirmed cases, 506 recoveries and 738 patients in isolation. The outbreak was declared May 15 in Ituri Province in eastern DRC and has also affected parts of North Kivu, areas where conflict, displacement and weak health infrastructure complicate response work.

The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola virus, which is less common than the Zaire species involved in the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic. Medical Daily noted that there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment for Bundibugyo, leaving responders to rely on isolation, contact tracing and supportive medical care. The report said the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern in May.

According to the article, cases have been confirmed beyond DRC, including in Uganda, France and Germany. It said an American humanitarian worker infected in DRC was evacuated to Germany for care after a positive test reported by the U.S. CDC in July.
