Dr. Obote College Boroboro in Lira has been highlighted by the Dokolo Post after one of its students, Senior Four pupil Odyek Luka, was selected for the Uganda Mathematical Society’s residential International Mathematical Olympiad training camp. The camp is scheduled for December 9 to 20 at Light Academy Secondary School in Lweza, Wakiso District, and the selection followed Luka’s performance in Paper II of the UMS National Mathematics Contest held on June 27, 2026.

According to the report, the result was announced during the Uganda Mathematics Conference at Makerere University. Dr. Obote College mathematics teacher and UMS coordinator Ocepa Robert said 15 of the school’s 25 students who took the first paper on March 28 advanced to the second round, which he described as evidence of the school’s growing strength in mathematics. He also said Luka’s achievement is the second time a DOC learner has reached the national IMO training programme.

Ocepa and other school voices used the occasion to encourage parents and students to support mathematics contests, saying they can lead to scholarships, further study and wider opportunities. Luka said his success came after years of persistence, regular practice and support from teachers and peers. The Uganda Mathematical Society, in a letter dated July 30, said the camp will prepare participants in areas including algebra, geometry, number theory and combinatorics for international competitions in 2027. More generally, such Olympiad pathways are often seen as a route for identifying and developing advanced math talent in schools.
