DP postpones national executive committee meeting to honour King Oyo

The Democratic Party has postponed its National Executive Committee meeting, which had been planned for September 11–12, 2026, so its leaders and members can join the country in mourning King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the late Omukama of Tooro. According to the party’s statement, the meeting will now be held in the first week of October 2026.

DP president general Norbert Mao said the change was made because the NEC dates overlapped with the national mourning period and the burial of King Oyo. He said he instructed the party’s secretary general to reschedule the gathering. The party also said it wanted to show solidarity with people in Tooro and with Ugandans observing the mourning period.

In its statement, the DP pointed to its long political ties to the Tooro sub-region, noting that the area elected DP members to Parliament in the 1961, 1962 and 1980 general elections. It cited the late William Nyakatura, elected on a DP ticket in 1980, as one example of that connection.

The party said officials led by Mao will represent it at the King’s funeral. The postponement comes as Uganda observes official mourning, following tributes to King Oyo from across the country and beyond.
