DP MPs Seek Meeting to Review NRM Cooperation Agreement

What the report says
Democratic Party (DP) Members of Parliament and regional representatives are seeking a meeting with the party’s National Council to air internal grievances and reassess DP’s cooperation agreement with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), according to Nile Post. The effort is being led in part by Aswa County MP Patrick Okello, who said members want a forum to raise concerns they believe need the attention of party leadership.
Okello said the proposed discussion would cover a broad set of matters, including party administration, policy direction, discipline, the legislative agenda and the party’s future. He said many DP legislators are currently tied up with committee duties and work on the national budgeting process, so a date for the meeting has not yet been fixed.
The planned engagement follows a postponed Democratic Party National Executive Committee meeting that was expected last month. Okello said that delay was linked to events around the burial of the Omukama of Bunyoro. He also said one of the main issues under review is whether the DP-NRM cooperation arrangement should be amended or cancelled.
In the article, Okello argued that the agreement had effectively run its course with the end of the 11th Parliament and described it as, in his view, no longer binding in the same way. The discussion is significant because it could clarify DP’s stance on political cooperation with the NRM and address tensions within the party ahead of future political and legislative activity.
