What the report says

Families in Uganda’s Lwengo and Rakai districts are dealing with widespread damage after heavy rains, strong winds and hailstones swept through several villages and destroyed more than 50 houses, according to Nile Post. The storm struck on Sunday night and affected communities in Katuulo Sub-county in Lwengo District and Lwamaggwa Sub-county in Rakai District, leaving many residents without shelter and concerned about food supplies after gardens were also damaged.

The report says roofs were blown off and some homes collapsed, forcing residents to sift through debris to recover belongings. Local leaders in the affected areas described urgent needs for emergency shelter, food and help rebuilding homes. One village leader in Bizo also raised security concerns, saying some families keep livestock inside houses at night because of theft risks.

In Rakai, a local council chairperson said more than 40 houses collapsed in Kisamba A village and called for assistance for vulnerable households, including elderly residents and those unable to rebuild on their own. The losses also threaten household incomes and food availability for agriculture-dependent families, and some parents are now worried about where children will stay as school-term examinations approach.

Nile Post’s account highlights how extreme weather can quickly disrupt housing, farming and schooling in rural communities. Residents and local officials are appealing for government and relief support as they try to secure shelter, food and essential supplies.
