Dozens evacuated and about 15 missing after Grand Canyon flash flood

At least 15 people are feared missing after flash flooding hit Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, according to the National Park Service, which said it was seeking information on people who may be unaccounted for after the event. More than 60 people had been evacuated by Sunday morning from the Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch areas after heavy flooding on Saturday afternoon.

The flooding sent large boulders, metal structures and other debris into the Colorado River and damaged infrastructure in Bright Angel Creek, a tributary that runs into the river. Park officials said footbridges were wiped out, the creek bed was widened and the landscape was significantly altered. No injuries have been reported so far, but further evacuations were planned and park staff were working with the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Several popular areas, including Bright Angel Campground, Phantom Ranch and parts of the North Kaibab Trail, remained closed while officials assessed the damage. Rafting on the Colorado River was also suspended. The report noted that more rain and thunderstorms were expected into Monday, adding to concerns in an area known for sudden and fast-changing weather conditions. In general, flash floods can be especially dangerous in canyon terrain because water can rise quickly and move debris with force.
