Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Trump have said that part of their May wedding festivities in the Bahamas was paid for by Umar Kremlev, a Russian businessman with close ties to President Vladimir Putin. In an Instagram statement attributed to the couple, they described the two nights of celebrations as a gift from a friend and said they remained grateful for the support.

The acknowledgment followed a ProPublica report that said Kremlev covered “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in costs for the event, including use of a private island venue and a fireworks display. According to the BBC report, the wedding itself took place on one island, followed by a two-day celebration on another property that rents for a high nightly rate. Kremlev also heads the International Boxing Association, which has faced scrutiny over links to Russian state-backed interests.

The BBC said ethics groups viewed the arrangement as an appearance problem even though Trump Jr. is a private citizen and not barred from receiving gifts from foreign nationals. CREW, a U.S. watchdog group, argued that lavish support from someone associated with a foreign leader could still raise concerns about influence and access.

The report adds to long-running attention on possible Russia-related ties around the Trump family, including past scrutiny during the 2016 U.S. election. It also comes amid broader questions about the line between personal relationships, political families and foreign-linked benefactors.
