Dodgers Activate Edwin Díaz - MLB Trade Rumors

MLB Trade Rumors reported that the Los Angeles Dodgers reinstated closer Edwin Díaz from the 60-day injured list on July 29, following more than three months out after elbow surgery to remove loose bodies. To open spots on both the active roster and 40-man roster, the club designated left-handed pitcher Charlie Barnes for assignment.

Díaz, a three-time All-Star, had struggled before the procedure, giving up seven runs, nine hits and five walks over his first six innings of the season. The report noted that his fastball velocity was down from the previous April, averaging 95.7 mph early this year and again during his Triple-A rehab stint. Even so, his minor league tune-up was encouraging, with 11 strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings while allowing two runs.

Los Angeles managed the late innings effectively during Díaz’s absence. Tanner Scott converted 16 of 18 save chances with a 2.32 ERA across 42 2/3 innings and is expected to shift back into a setup role. Evan Phillips, recently back from Tommy John surgery, Brock Stewart and Alex Vesia give manager Dave Roberts additional late-game options. MLB Trade Rumors noted the Dodgers’ bullpen ranked mid-pack in ERA but near the top of the league in strikeout rate and had limited blown saves despite frequent high-leverage leads.

The move comes with the Dodgers in strong postseason position, leading the National League race for a top seed. Barnes, 30, had allowed seven runs in 10 innings over four appearances for Los Angeles and could return to waivers within days, with the right to elect free agency if he clears.
