District Leadership Commences Monitoring of Government Programmes

Wakiso District Local Government reported that District Chairperson Eng. Ian Kyeyune Sengonzi and technical officials have begun a districtwide monitoring exercise focused on government programmes. The first stop was the planned relocation area for Wakiso Market traders, as the district prepares for construction of a new Wakiso Daily Market.

According to the district’s July 27, 2026 update, officials reviewed readiness at the temporary market site, which is expected to host 420 vendors. The local government said traders are due to move there within about three weeks, once the temporary facility is completed. That relocation is intended to clear the current site so works on the new market can proceed.

The district cited the project manager from Techno Three U Ltd as saying preparations for the temporary site are moving in parallel with steps for the main market project. Reported activities include securing the construction area, processing building and development permits, and completing requirements for a demolition permit. The contractor is also said to have mobilised workers and equipment so construction can start once statutory approvals are in place.

The development matters for traders and residents because markets are key trading hubs and public infrastructure projects can disrupt livelihoods if relocation and construction are poorly managed. Wakiso District framed the monitoring exercise as part of efforts to track implementation, strengthen accountability and support service delivery and local economic activity.
