DIGITAL ECONOMY: Union Transport Alliance unveils ecosystem to connect transport, finance, and social services

What the report says
Union Transport Alliance has unveiled plans to expand from a transport-focused platform into a broader digital ecosystem linking transport services with payments, health cover, education financing, energy access and online commerce. The announcement was made by chief executive Fred Ssenoga during an interview in Kampala on Friday, August 21, 2026, according to Watchdog Uganda.
Ssenoga said the model is intended to bring together transport operators, consumers and businesses through a single digital network. He described transport as a practical entry point for digitising everyday economic activity, noting that boda-boda riders, taxi operators, conductors and truck drivers handle large volumes of cash transactions that could be converted into traceable digital payments. The alliance is partnering with RukaPay to provide payment infrastructure for the system.
The platform also includes features aimed at easing short-term cash-flow pressures for informal workers, with micro-financing options available through registration on the app. Watchdog Uganda reported that the system is being positioned to support school-fee payments, merchant transactions and other routine expenses, while a planned insurance initiative called Twetase would offer transport and health coverage for workers and their families.
Union Transport Alliance also plans a digital marketplace called Union Online Duuka and an energy arm, Union Oil. The broader push reflects a wider trend in Uganda and across Africa, where transport and mobile payment platforms are increasingly being linked to wider financial and social services. The main test for the initiative will be whether users adopt it at scale and whether it can operate reliably across transport corridors.
