Deputy Speaker Tayebwa endorses Muhoozi for 2031 Presidential Bid

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has publicly endorsed Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba as a future presidential candidate for Uganda’s 2031 election, according to The Independent Uganda. The endorsement was made on Monday at a digital website launch held at the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) secretariat in Naguru, Kampala. Tayebwa described the gathering as a civic show of support rather than a party rally and said it reflected a nationwide call for Muhoozi to take over when President Yoweri Museveni eventually leaves office.

Muhoozi currently serves as Chief of Defence Forces and is Museveni’s son. He recently said he intends to run for president, after previously being linked to interest in the 2026 race. Tayebwa used social media to repeat his backing and to stress that PLU is not a political party, but a civic organization that works alongside the ruling National Resistance Movement. He said the group aims to organize citizens, especially young people, around patriotism, service and national development.

The event drew several prominent figures, including former Vice President Gilbert Bukenya, current and former ministers, MPs, business leaders such as Sudhir Ruparelia, and religious leaders, The Independent reported. The endorsement adds to Uganda’s early speculation about succession politics, especially as Museveni, who has governed since 1986, approaches another possible election cycle in 2031.
