Commissioner of Police Ecotu Agapitus, the deputy commander of Uganda’s Field Force Unit, has died at Mulago Hospital, according to The Independent Uganda, which cited URN. The report said the cause of death had not yet been established. Police were expected to issue a formal statement later on the circumstances and burial arrangements.

The Independent said Ecotu was serving under Assistant Inspector General of Police John Nuwagira in the FFU, the police formation responsible for public order, riot control and tactical operations. The article also noted that senior police sources described his death as a loss to the force, pointing to a career that included work in administration, field operations and international peacekeeping.

Before joining the FFU leadership, Ecotu reportedly worked in the Directorate of Human Resource Administration at police headquarters, and also served in counter-terrorism roles, including in the Oil and Gas Protection Division. He had earlier held senior responsibilities in the Rwenzori region during sensitive security operations after the 2016 Kasese clashes. The report said President Yoweri Museveni promoted him to commissioner in June 2023.

The article added that he had been shortlisted for United Nations police roles linked to the African Union mission in Somalia and had taken part in Ugandan police deployments in Mogadishu. Beyond the immediate news of his death, the report suggests he was a long-serving officer with experience in both domestic security and regional peacekeeping.
