The protests, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), drew tens of thousands of young people and, according to the BBC, helped force the resignation of education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

During the parliamentary debate, MPs from both the government and opposition used online terms associated with the protest movement. The BBC cited Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde using “MIA,” “FOMO” and “delulu” against the opposition, Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda referring to a viral protest meme, and BJP MPs Bansuri Swaraj and Tejasvi Surya adopting similar language while defending the government’s bill. Opposition MP Supriya Sule questioned the turn to youth slang before also using it herself.

The CJP began as a satirical online collective, the BBC reported, but became a wider outlet for frustration over unemployment, institutions and political responsiveness. Its organising and messaging relied heavily on WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram reels, memes and short videos. The government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also responded through social media as the protests gained momentum.

Analysts quoted by the BBC cautioned that politicians have long borrowed from popular culture to connect with voters, though internet slang is unusually fast-moving and collectively produced. The report also noted continuing tensions after the protests, including attempts to remove some protest-related content and legal action against students and activists. CJP figures are demanding those cases be withdrawn, while supporters argue that online humour can coexist with demands for accountability.
