Defeated Kanungu LC1 chairperson dies in election victory fire

The Observer reports that Justus Byakurama, 61, a former Local Council I chairperson for Bikomero village in Katungu parish, Kanungu district, died after being badly burned in a house fire that broke out after Tuesday’s village elections. Byakurama had sought re-election but was defeated by Precious Tweheireyo Kinumi, who received 138 votes to Byakurama’s 47, according to the reported official tally.

According to the account published by The Observer, Byakurama went home with his family after the results were announced. Later that night, Kinumi, described as both the election winner and Byakurama’s neighbour, reportedly lit a fire as part of victory celebrations. Residents said the blaze spread at about 11:00 p.m., first reaching Byakurama’s kitchen and then the main house.

A local resident, Moses Tugumisirize, told the publication that Byakurama and his family awoke and tried to fight the flames. Byakurama suffered serious burns during that effort and was taken to Kambuga Hospital, where he later died on Wednesday. Kigezi regional police spokesperson Elly Maate said the body was moved to the hospital mortuary for a postmortem.

Police have opened inquiries into the incident and are looking for suspected arsonists, The Observer reported. Authorities had not yet determined the precise cause of the fire or whether it was directly connected to the election celebrations. The case is significant because it links a fatality to the immediate aftermath of local council elections, while investigators are still working to establish what happened and who, if anyone, may be criminally responsible.
