BBC News reported that Charli XCX’s new album, “Music, Fashion, Film,” marks a quick return to recording after the major commercial and cultural impact of “Brat.” According to the BBC, Charli had been expected to pause after a demanding year that included the Brat tour, acting work, a soundtrack for Emerald Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights” adaptation and her marriage to George Daniel. Instead, she said new inspiration arrived suddenly, leading to 11 brief, guitar-led songs written over a matter of weeks.

The BBC’s music correspondent Mark Savage described the album as a deliberate move away from simply repeating “Brat,” while noting that it is not a straightforward rock record. Although guitars are central and one song includes a line about making rock music, the report said the album still uses manipulated vocals and electronic elements. Charli has also said the shift reflects her desire not to keep making the same kind of electronic-leaning music.

The album’s visual presentation also signals its wider theme. Rather than featuring Charli on the cover, promotional imagery shows John Cale, Marc Jacobs and Martin Scorsese, figures associated with music, fashion and film. Charli told BBC 6 Music that bringing them together in New York was emotional because of their importance to her as an artist.
