Death toll from Nepal-Tibet flood passes 470 as barrier lake threatens

Rescue and recovery operations are continuing in Nepal and Tibet after a devastating flash flood that began on Wednesday in the Himalayan border region. According to Al Jazeera’s reporting, the disaster was triggered by a glacier collapse that sent ice, water, rock and mud through river valleys, destroying roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure and burying villages.

Nepal’s prime minister’s office said 469 people were confirmed dead and 977 were missing, while Chinese authorities reported at least three deaths in Tibet and 558 people missing there. Nepal said 644 of its missing are foreigners. Around 1,550 people have been rescued so far, with many reached by helicopter or overland where possible. Officials and disaster experts told Al Jazeera that conditions remain extremely difficult, with large stretches of road washed out and survivors in need of shelter and food.

A major concern is a newly formed barrier lake near the Nepal-China border. Authorities in both countries say it is unstable and could burst, raising the risk of additional flooding. Chinese officials said the lake contains about two million cubic metres of water and could receive more in the coming days. Because of mudslide fears, work near the border town of Gyirong has been paused.

Nepal has deployed thousands of security personnel for the search effort, while China has sent military and paramilitary teams. Nepal’s foreign ministry said it does not currently need international assistance, though it has asked for other forms of aid. The scale of the disaster and the number still missing have left families waiting for news as rescue teams race against worsening conditions.
