What the report says

The Czech Republic’s governing coalition has moved forward with a bill to overhaul public media funding, despite sharp criticism that the plan could weaken the independence of broadcasters. According to Al Jazeera’s report based on Reuters, lawmakers advanced the proposal in an unusual overnight vote in the early hours of Saturday, sending it to committees for further debate.

The bill would eliminate the current household broadcasting fee of 205 crowns ($9.45) and replace it with funding from the state budget. The changes are expected to reduce support for Czech Television and Czech Radio by about 15 percent while leaving nominal funding unchanged for several years. Public media staff and critics argue that placing funding under the state budget could increase political influence over editorial decisions.

Prime Minister Andrej Babis, a billionaire populist whose government is backed by the far-right SPD party, has defended the move as a campaign promise and said it would be fairer to lower-income households and encourage efficiency. He has also rejected claims that the overhaul is aimed at controlling the media. Opposition parties have compared the plan with media reforms associated with Hungary under Viktor Orban.

The dispute has already prompted protest action. Public broadcasters staged a strike in June, and a civic group has called another protest for Sunday. Journalists and other employees at the broadcasters have also announced a strike for November 3. Public media remain among the country’s most trusted news sources, making the funding shift politically significant.
