Czech pair Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik win US Open mixed doubles

What the report says
Czech players Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik won the US Open mixed doubles title in New York on Wednesday, defeating Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic and Italy’s Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 1-6, 10-6. The victory gave Muchova and Mensik their first Grand Slam trophy together as a team. Al Jazeera reported that the final was played at Arthur Ashe Stadium, where the Czechs took the opening set quickly before Bencic and Cobolli forced a deciding 10-point tiebreak.
Mensik’s serve was a major factor throughout the match, while Muchova contributed at the net and on serve in the closing stages. The pair sealed the title with an ace, capping a strong run in the event’s revamped mixed doubles draw. Before reaching the final, Muchova and Mensik had saved two match points in their semifinal against Russia’s Mirra Andreeva and Andrey Rublev.
The mixed doubles competition featured 16 teams and began on Tuesday in the second year of the US Open’s updated format, which pairs prominent singles players and is designed to attract larger crowds before the start of the main singles tournament. Al Jazeera also noted that some of the draw’s other notable pairings included Novak Djokovic with Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz with Serena Williams.
