What the report says

Fox Business reported that CVS Pharmacy is broadening its pharmacy services to include certain prescriptions for dogs and cats at about 9,000 stores across the United States. The company says pet owners can fill eligible medications such as antibiotics, allergy drugs, flea and tick treatments, insulin and pain relievers through CVS locations.

According to the report, customers may bring a written prescription to a store or have a veterinarian contact CVS directly. Some prescriptions may also qualify for delivery. CVS said pet medications that meet eligibility requirements can use services similar to those offered for human prescriptions, including automatic refills and syncing multiple prescriptions to one schedule.

CVS is also allowing customers to add pets to their CVS.com profiles and manage qualifying prescriptions in the CVS Health app. The company said electronic prescribing tools for veterinarians are expected in the coming months. Sid Tenneti, CVS Health’s senior vice president and interim president of pharmacy and consumer wellness, framed the move as a way for CVS to serve all members of a household.

The expansion places CVS more directly in a pet medication market already served by veterinarians, online pharmacies and specialty pet retailers, and it may be especially relevant for owners managing recurring treatments for animals with ongoing conditions. Fox Business noted that CVS has also widened its pet-related retail assortment, including food, grooming, wellness and flea and tick products. The company did not provide a sales forecast for the new prescription offering.
