CBS Sports reported that the Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals completed an official young-player-for-young-player trade ahead of MLB’s 2026 deadline, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on Monday, Aug. 3. Boston received right-handed-hitting corner infielder Curtis Mead, who is under team control through 2030, while Washington acquired left-handed starting pitcher Connelly Early, controlled through 2031.

According to CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa, the deal reflects the different needs of the two clubs. Washington has had one of baseball’s most productive offenses but a run-prevention problem, while Boston has pitched well and struggled to score. The Nationals, hovering around .500, were described as positioned to both buy and sell. The Red Sox, boosted by a recent 15-game winning streak, are in the postseason race and needed a right-handed bat.

Mead, 25, has broken out this season after joining Washington, hitting .254/.352/.500 with 17 home runs, strong walk and strikeout rates, and notable success against left-handed pitching. CBS Sports noted that his fit at Fenway Park could be helped by his increased pulled fly-ball contact, though his defense at third base remains a concern. Boston may have to adjust its infield alignment to keep both Mead and Masataka Yoshida in the lineup.

Early, 24, gives Washington a young starter with recent major-league success, though he is currently on the injured list with elbow inflammation. CBS Sports graded the trade a B for Boston, citing the price and timing, and viewed it more favorably for Washington because the Nationals turned a low-cost offensive pickup into controllable pitching help.
