What the report says

African filmmakers and industry leaders meeting at the Africa Film Forum in Johannesburg, South Africa, urged stronger cross-border partnerships to help the continent’s film sector grow, reach larger audiences and become more commercially viable. The Independent Uganda reported that the discussion took place on October 15, 2026, during the iKON Activate programme at MultiChoice City under the theme “Africa Is Our Studio: From Collaboration to Commerce.”

Panelists said African cinema has abundant talent and stories, but needs better distribution, audience development, investment and business systems to turn creative work into sustainable enterprises. Humphrey Nabimanya of iKON Awards called for filmmakers to move beyond isolated national markets and share resources and expertise. Nicola Van Niekerk of MultiChoice Group said stronger links between markets and distribution networks could help local content travel further. Other speakers, including Matthew Nabwiso of Uganda’s National Producers’ Guild, emphasized leadership, mentorship and structures that support emerging filmmakers.

The forum also focused on practical steps such as market research, strategic marketing, financial accountability, government incentives, skills development and access to financing. Ernest Nkosi and Nwabisa Binase stressed the importance of understanding audiences and making content that reflects lived experience and cultural identity. The event brought together established professionals and emerging talent, reflecting wider efforts to deepen pan-African collaboration in the film industry. The Independent noted that the Johannesburg forum builds on earlier iKON Activate sessions in other African cities, and that the next iKON Awards are scheduled for Kampala in December 2026.
