Coventry announce themselves back in the big time

What the report says
Coventry City have marked their return to the Premier League with a statement home win over Newcastle United, ending a 25-year wait for a top-flight goal and victory in front of their own fans. The BBC Sport report says the result also lifted Frank Lampard’s side out of the relegation zone after successive league wins, leaving them level on points with Manchester United after six games and 14th in the table.
The Sky Blues scored four goals for the first time in the top flight since May 2000, with Jack Rudoni converting a penalty, Sidiki Cherif opening his Coventry account, and late strikes from Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni completing the rout. BBC Sport noted that Cherif, a summer signing from Fenerbahce, was handed his first Premier League start and became Coventry’s youngest Premier League scorer since Robbie Keane. The teenager also scored from outside the box, something Coventry had not managed in the league since 2001.
Lampard said the result should be a confidence boost, but stressed the need for humility and consistency. He pointed to the club’s limited Premier League experience among several players and said the team must keep their feet on the ground. The win came after a difficult start at the CBS Arena, where Coventry had already lost to Hull, Brighton and Aston Villa in cup competition. With tougher fixtures ahead, the club is hoping the Newcastle result can provide a platform for survival.
