Coventry agree deal for Forest striker Awoniyi

Coventry City have agreed a deal worth about £17m to sign Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi, according to BBC Sport Football. The move is expected to be completed before Coventry face Arsenal in their Premier League return on Friday, marking the club’s first top-flight season in 25 years.

Awoniyi, 29, joined Forest from Union Berlin in 2022 for £17.2m, then a club record fee, and scored 23 goals in 103 appearances. BBC Sport reports that he fell behind Chris Wood and Igor Jesus in the attacking order, started only three league matches last season and was left out of Forest’s Europa League squad. He scored four goals in 17 appearances in all competitions last season.

The report also notes a serious injury setback in May 2025, when Awoniyi was placed in an induced coma after rupturing his intestine in a collision with a post during a match against Leicester. For Coventry, the signing adds to a busy summer under manager Frank Lampard, with the club already bringing in Gus Hamer, Carl Rushworth, Loum Tchaouna, Aurele Amenda and Caleb Yirenkyi.

Coventry’s forward options are currently limited, with Haji Wright injured and Brandon Thomas-Asante and Ellis Simms the main fit strikers available ahead of the Arsenal opener.
