Cove Rangers handed season-long registration embargo over rule breaches

What the report says
Cove Rangers have been hit with a season-long registration embargo by the Scottish Professional Football League after admitting rule breaches linked to a payment owed to a player. BBC Sport reported that the Scottish League 1 club failed to make a historic contractual payment when it was due and did not properly inform the SPFL that it was in default of the relevant rule.
The league also said Cove Rangers gave incorrect information when it certified there were no overdue payments to current or former players as of 31 January 2026. Alongside the embargo, the tribunal imposed a £5,000 fine, with £2,000 suspended. The registration ban is due to remain in place until 31 May 2027.
Cove Rangers said the club had now made full payment to the player involved and was considering all available options after what it described as a disappointing outcome. The club said it was reviewing the decision and referred to the matter as relating to a historic 2024 contractual payment and later reporting issues.
The sanction matters because registration embargoes can limit a club’s ability to strengthen its squad during the restriction period. Cove Rangers are currently second bottom of League 1, with five points from eight matches, which adds further pressure as they navigate the case.
