Court to Rule October 30 on Challenge to Tanna’s Tororo Municipality Victory

What the report says
The High Court in Tororo has scheduled October 30, 2026, to deliver judgment in a parliamentary election petition challenging the victory of Tororo Municipality MP Shyam Jay Tanna. The case was brought by former Tororo Municipality MP Apollo Yeri Ofwono, who was the National Resistance Movement candidate in the January 15, 2026 parliamentary elections, according to Nile Post.
Justice Irene Barebe concluded the hearing on Thursday, October 1, after three days of evidence-taking and cross-examination. The proceedings included questioning of witnesses for both Tanna and the Electoral Commission, as well as the petitioner’s witnesses. Among those mentioned were Tanna, his witness Henry Epaku, Electoral Commission official Robert Twikirize, and Hellen Athieno, the presiding officer at Kyamwinula polling station A-M.
Nile Post reported that Ofwono’s petition centers on allegations of electoral violence and voter bribery. He claims his supporters and polling agents were attacked during the poll and says Tanna bribed voters, though those claims have not been determined by the court. The hearing also covered the role of the Electoral Commission in conducting the election.
The judge set October 8 and 19 for the parties’ written submissions before judgment. According to the declared results cited in the report, Tanna won with 5,781 votes against Ofwono’s 4,829, a margin of 952 votes. The ruling will decide whether that result stands.
