Court Stops Kalangwa’s Daughter Birungi From Collecting Shs60m Monthly Rent

What the report says
KAMPALA — A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Mengo has issued an interim injunction stopping Jackline Kobusingye Birungi, daughter of the late businessman Moses Kaliisa Kalangwa, from collecting or otherwise handling rental income from Volcano Bus Terminal on Namirembe Road. According to Watchdog Uganda, the property is said to generate about Shs60 million a month in rent.
The dispute pits Birungi against Katongole International Group Limited, which says it had managed the terminal and collected rent before Kalangwa’s death. The company argues that after his death, Birungi directed tenants to pay into a different bank account, and it wants the court to address how that money has been handled. The court order does not decide who is ultimately entitled to the rent or whether funds collected through the new account were properly accounted for.
Instead, the court directed that rental income from the terminal be preserved and deposited in a court account under the name of the Registrar High Court at the Bank of Uganda until the case is heard and determined or the court issues further orders. The injunction also bars the parties and their agents from collecting, transferring, or otherwise dealing with the disputed income outside the court’s directions.
Watchdog Uganda reported that the ruling is part of wider disagreements over management of Kalangwa’s estate, which have also involved other property and livestock. The substantive application is scheduled to be heard on November 9, 2026.
