Court Remands Eight Medical Interns as Deployment Standoff Escalates

Buganda Road Court in Uganda has remanded eight health-worker interns to Luzira Prison until Monday after they were re-arrested amid an escalating dispute over internship deployment and welfare, according to Nile Post. The group includes pharmacists and nurses, among them FUMI Secretary General Allan Okwir, and their lawyers said they are facing public nuisance-related charges after earlier being taken into custody for trying to march to Parliament and the Office of the Prime Minister.

Nile Post reported that the interns had initially been granted bond, but were taken back into custody after reporting to police on Friday morning. In court, their legal team asked for bail and presented sureties, while prosecutors requested more time to verify the proposed sureties. The court declined immediate release and directed that the matter return on Monday.

The arrests have become part of a wider standoff between government and medical interns over deployment rules, financial support and policy changes. Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi has said eligible interns were deployed and should report between August 3 and August 14, warning that failure to do so could jeopardize their placements. The interns and the Federation for Uganda Medical Interns say they are not rejecting training itself, but want the policy reviewed through consultation and improved welfare support.

The dispute has also drawn backing from the Uganda Medical Association, which has given government a 14-day ultimatum. More broadly, the case highlights pressure on Uganda’s health sector, where staffing shortages remain a recurring concern, though that context was not the main subject of the court ruling reported by Nile Post.
