Medical News Today reported on a new paper in NPJ Aging that uses mathematical modeling to examine whether accumulated DNA changes could set an outer boundary on human longevity. The study focuses on somatic mutations, genetic changes that arise in body cells after birth and gradually build up over a lifetime. The authors propose that these mutations may create “longevity bottlenecks,” even if other major aging processes or diseases could be controlled.
According to the report, the model estimated that if all aging mechanisms were hypothetically removed, human life spans could extend far beyond current limits. But when somatic mutations were included, the projected median maximum fell to roughly 146–194 years, about twice the present global life expectancy figure cited in the article. Medical News Today highlighted the researchers’ estimate of about 190 years as a theoretical upper limit under those assumptions.
The article noted that some tissues appeared more vulnerable than others. The model suggested liver cells could remain resilient for far longer, while neurons and myocardial cells in the heart may be critical weak points because they do not readily regenerate once lost. Failure in those cell types could ultimately make the brain and heart central constraints on survival.
Independent experts quoted by Medical News Today cautioned that the findings are based on a simplified model, not a real-world demonstration. They said mutation rates, tissue thresholds and interactions among aging processes remain uncertain. The report frames the study as a possible guide for future aging research rather than evidence that people can currently reach such ages.
