What the report says

South African prosecutors have withdrawn fraud and corruption charges against Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo, the head of the police’s crime intelligence unit, along with six other officers. The case centered on the allegedly unlawful appointment of a civilian to a senior technical role in the unit, a move investigators said amounted to a token appointment. The accused were arrested in June 2025, denied wrongdoing and were not suspended.

BBC Africa reported that the charges were formally dropped in Pretoria after a review by the country’s chief prosecutor last month. Speaking outside court, Khumalo said he was relieved that the truth had come out. The BBC also noted that the appointment at the center of the case was later examined by the Madlanga Commission, a judicial inquiry set up by President Cyril Ramaphosa to examine alleged corruption and criminal infiltration within South Africa’s police and government.

The withdrawal of the case comes against a wider backdrop of long-running concerns about political interference and corruption in South Africa’s police service, and persistent difficulties in tackling violent crime. BBC Africa reported that evidence before the commission suggested the civilian appointee was qualified for the post, and that a senior National Prosecuting Authority official later apologized for earlier remarks about her qualifications. Khumalo has led crime intelligence since 2022, after more than two decades in various police roles.
