Cornucopian is euthanized after leg injury at Del Mar - Horse Racing Nation

Horse Racing Nation reported that Cornucopian, a 4-year-old colt and two-time graded-stakes winner, was euthanized Sunday at Del Mar after being injured during Saturday’s Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes. The report said jockey Juan Hernández pulled the colt up on the far turn of the six-furlong race while he was advancing from fourth, and Cornucopian was braced before being taken off the track by equine ambulance.

According to a California Horse Racing Board safety steward’s report cited by Horse Racing Nation, Cornucopian sustained a right-front fetlock injury and was euthanized Sunday at 1:45 p.m. EDT because of a poor prognosis. Tom Ryan of lead owner SF Racing said on X that the ownership group worked with veterinarians and, after expert opinions, chose to let the colt go. The report described Cornucopian as owned in partnership and trained by Bob Baffert.

Cornucopian, by Into Mischief, had entered the Bing Crosby after winning the Aristides Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs on May 30 and the San Carlos Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita on March 29. Horse Racing Nation reported that he was a $1.1 million yearling purchase with a career record of four wins from eight starts and $462,155 in earnings. He was the 6-5 favorite in the Bing Crosby, which was won by Listenupshance and served as a Breeders’ Cup Sprint qualifying race.

The outlet also reported a second fatality at Del Mar over the weekend: Can You Dream, a 3-year-old filly, was euthanized after a left-front fetlock injury in Sunday’s eighth race. Horse Racing Nation cited CHRB fatality data indicating these were Del Mar’s first racing or training deaths since Nov. 2.
